The Conscientious Carnivore: How to Have Your Meat & Eat It Too

The Conscientious Carnivore: How to Have Your Meat & Eat It Too
Santa Monica Farmers Market

So you love bacon and pork belly, Époisses and Montgomery Cheddar, dry aged beef and, well, one could go on, but you don't like the idea of commercial animal production. You don't want to have Michael Pollan-narrated nightmares about slaughterhouses every time you eat a massive prime rib for dinner. Well, many farmers are, of course, raising animals for meat and dairy in a humane way and thus giving you an option somewhat more acceptable than becoming a vegan.

Thus the Santa Monica Farmers Market's Quarterly Library Panel Series presents, on August 12th, The Conscientious Carnivore, a talk moderated by Evan Kleiman (Angeli Caffe, Good Food) and featuring chef Evan Funke (Rustic Canyon), and farmers Marcie Jimenez (Jimenez Farm), Diane Tropper (Lily's Eggs) and Mark McAffee (Organic Pastures Dairy). Among them, these three farmers raise lamb, goats, rabbits, chicken and cows, and supply both Angeli Caffe and Rustic Canyon. After two hours of discussion, you can stay and happily eat some meat and diary, presumably, prepared by Funke. Because you'll be hungry and it would be kind of ridiculous to go eat a salad, even a very good one, on the way home.

The Conscientious Carnivore: Santa Monica Public Library, MLK Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica; (310) 458-8600. Thursday, August 12th, 7 - 9 p.m.
