Mongolian BBQ Ready to Fill Up, Sizzle and Serve at Gobi in Silver Lake
Sweet after savory is always good, right? Maybe that's part of the entrepreneurial logic behind Pazzo Gelato co-owner Michael Buch and his fellow business partners opening the contemporary styled Gobi Mongolian BBQ House on Sunset just east of Parkman/Silver Lake Boulevard.
Following a soft opening period, customers are now assembling their individual bowls with thinly sliced meats (chicken, pork, beef, lamb), veggies, tofu, pineapple, noodles and sauces/condiments (BBQ, lemon lemongrass, ginger). Hand the cooks your potentially overflowing bowl, they toss it over the insanely huge round griddle, and a couple minutes later, steaming plates are ready to be eaten. Call it a modern day, post-globalized and, most obviously, cooked version of the Sizzler salad bar.
Hair of the Dog, Uncommon Brewers, and Saison Dupont ales appear on the list alongside more familiar beer brand names of Sapporo and Stella. And much like its neighbor Rambutan Thai, Gobi has put together a collection of soju cocktails; choose from pomegranate, cosmo, ginger and lime, and Red Bull-spiked drinks, or sakes.
Co-owner Christina Rivera explains Gobi isn't a typical version of Mongolian BBQ, since "the natural meat gives it a different spin. It's a far cry from a mall approach. We wanted to do something really unique, and it's healthy and quick." Lunch is $9.95, and larger bowls are put out on the assembly line come dinnertime for $13.95. After either meal, head a few blocks west to Pazzo for dessert.
