Michael Mina and Katsuya Uechi Cook Dueling Tasting Menus at XIV
Tired of watching chefs face off on television? Next week at XIV, chefs Michael Mina (Stonehill Tavern, XIV) and Katsuya Uechi (Katsuya, Katsu-Ya) face off, sort of, in an actual kitchen to cook a six course dinner of dueling tasting menus. No Quickfire challenges, just side-by-side dishes wherein each chef riffs on the same ingredient. The dinner, billed as an "east meets west" match-up, is next Tuesday, November 3rd at Mina's Sunset Boulevard restaurant.
Among the featured ingredients: Nantucket Bay scallops, bluefin tuna, Thai snapper and Kobe beef. The dinner is priced at $90, or $135 with wine and sake pairings. Or for $50, you can eat canapés and drink "bottomless" drinks on the restaurant's terrace at 10 p.m. It's highly doubtful that Mina and Uechi will still be facing off and thus competitively mixing your martinis, but you never know. Guess it depends on whose bottomless drink we're talking about.
