It's October on the calendar and thus theoretically great ramen weather. Alas, theory hasn't quite met thermometer just yet, but when it does, it might be a good time to welcome the belated fall season with a nice bowl of noodles from a new ramen joint (yes, another one): Japanese chain Men Oh Tokushima Ramen officially opens a 29-seat location in Little Tokyo's Honda Plaza today, Tuesday, Oct. 2.
As general manager Jun Isogai explains, most regions in Japan have their unique style of ramen, and even with our many ramen joints all over the city, Los Angeles has not yet seen much of Men Oh's namesake version.
According to Isogai, Men Oh's signature ramen dates back some 15 years and hails from the pig farming region of Tokushima; thanks to the area's plentiful pig bones, the broth is very rich, very savory and exceptionally porky. At Men Oh, both stir-fried pork belly and tender slices of chashu are toppings, as are bamboo shoots and green onions. And though Tokushima ramen often is served in Japan with a raw egg, Isogai says he's still looking for a local source to supply (pasteurized) raw eggs for the Little Tokyo shop. Until then, you'll find a perfectly acceptable seasoned, poached Jidori egg in your bowl instead.
For those seeking something a bit milder, Men Oh also offers its versions of Hakata-style tonkotsu and Tokyo-style shoyu ramen. A handful of sides, including gyoza, chicken karaage and agedashi tofu, will round out your meal, and Sapporo on draft is coming soon.
Men Oh Tokushima Ramen will be open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
