Latest on Magic Castle Fire: May Reopen on Friday
Magic Castle officials announced via Twitter that they hoped to be back in business by Friday night. They should know more in the next two days about the attic fire that erupted yesterday, just before 12:45 p.m., according to our sister blog, The Informer.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was on the scene immediately to assess the extent of the damage. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading out of the attic, but water damage may not be so limited.
No cause for the fire has been determined, but a source told the Los Angeles Times that maintenance crews had been working at the facilities on Monday morning.
The Magic Castle was built in 1909 by a prominent real estate figure who wanted to plant orange groves around the property. The estate, located in what is now known as the Hollywood Hills, passed through a number of tenants before opening as the Magic Castle in 1963.
These days, it's a "private clubhouse," the kind of place where men are required to show up in suits and women in dresses, for old-school steak-and-potato dinners followed by an array of magic shows.
