Last Free Concert on the Pier This Thursday: A Patti Smith Appropriate Take Out Menu
Rock legend Patti Smith is performing the season closer again this year at Santa Monica's free Concerts on the Pier on Thursday night. Although you can't BYOB like at the Hollywood Bowl, you can pack a killer picnic. Here are a few take-out suggestions appropriate for noshing while listening to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer that you can pick up when you pull off the 10 freeway. Word to the Wise: Most of these joints close by 7 p.m., the bewitching hour for concert (albeit the opener), so make sure to grab your eats early.
The Godmother Sandwich from Bay Cities Italian Deli
Why: Could there be a more perfect sandwich for the return of the Godmother of Punk? Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Coppacola, Ham, Prosciutto and Provolone cheese are piled on an Italian Roll. Place your order online to avoid the long lines, although the parking is the real problem here (easily solved if you bring a friend for a curbside drop/submarine sandwich drive-by).
Bay Cities Italian Deli, 1517 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 395-8279. Open until 7 p.m. Thursday.
Rib Eye Steak Tacos from Le Grande Orange
Why: It's lovely to watch a concert on the pier, but punk tunes sound so much better in a smoke-filled bar. These beef tacos are super smoky, and the house-made corn tortillas speckled with fresh corn flat out rock (although the guac and pico servings are unfortunately appropriately spartan for a Patti Smith concert).
Le Grande Orange, 2000 N Main St., Santa Monica, (310) 396-9145. Open until 11 p.m. Thursday.
Smoked Salmon BLT from Santa Monica Seafood Café
Why: When Patti Smith is involved, it's wise to steer clear of anything seafood related in Redondo Beach. The to-go dishes here aren't fancy, but the salmon is cured in-house, and you can pick up a couple of classic cold potato salads and slaws from the seafood counter while you wait for your order.
Santa Monica Seafood Café , 1000 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 393-5244 ext. 3. Open until 9 p.m. Thursday.
Banana Caramel Pie from Huckleberry Café
Why: After an hour of listening to sad tales of suicide and dead-end jobs, you're going to need a really big slice of pie. Might as well toss in a slice of coconut cake and chocolate peanut butter tart, while you're at it. They may be on the pricey side, but heck, the concert is free.
Huckleberry Café, 1014 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 451-2311. Open until 7 p.m. Thursday.
