Happy Hour: Pour Haus Wine Bar in the Arts District
Christine ChiaoA glass of Chenin Blanc at Pour Haus
Place: Pour Haus Wine Bar, 1820 Industrial St., Los Angeles; (213) 327-0304.
Hours: Daily 4 -7 p.m.
Deals: All food and drink options are $5 each. Five drink options -- red, white, sparkling, beer, or soju mojito -- rotate, while six food selections, from bruschetta to roasted pee wee potatoes with red aioli, stay constant.
Vibe: Before you get situated at one of the tall tables spaced inside the wine bar, you're greeted with a sample of wine followed by a complimentary ramekin of popcorn. There is a sizable craft beer list, but the sample you tried will probably have compelled you to continue with wine.
The white wine available for happy hour was a slightly dry Chenin Blanc on one visit. We tried this with Greek nachos composed of spiced pita chips, kalamata olives and feta topped with chopped cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as a tzatziki yogurt that was heavy on dill. The oxtail tacos with chimichurri were a bit more flavorful on the page than they were in real life.
You'll notice that the unfussy hospitality extends from the group of eight professionals to the middle-aged man sitting at the bar by himself. A collection of board games stacked on built-in shelves toward the back signals that you're welcome to linger over the wine and small bites. It probably won't surprise you that the neighborhood bar hosts a weekly trivia night.
