To celebrate Elvis Presley’s birthday on January 8, Salt & Straw ice cream on Larchmont is scooping a special flavor for the entire month.
Known for their unusual flavor combinations, like tomato-and-olive-oil sherbet, the Portland-based company embraces the King’s favorite flavor combination of banana/bacon/peanut butter – really quite visionary if you think about it – with a dedicated ice cream.
Salt & Straw’s interpretation of this trio of ingredients starts with a banana pudding ice cream, mixes in Marionberry Jam from Oregon Hill Farms and adds homemade peanut butter-bacon butterfingers.
Fool’s Gold, a sandwich rumored to be amongst Elvis’s top cravings, starts with an entire sourdough loaf, stuffs the inside with blueberry jam and peanut butter and then fills it out with a pound of bacon, equaling about 42,000 calories.
Nearly as famous for his gluttony as for his music, Elvis died at 41, and was alleged to have eaten as much as 65,000 calories a day. His doctor, Dr. George Nichopoulos, remarked after completing the singer’s autopsy that Elvis had an extra long colon – about three feet longer than average – and concluded that this contributed to his early death.
While most of us may not be interested in going to the extremes of Fool’s Gold, Salt & Straw’s amusing twist on Elvis’s preferred flavor palate enables you to taste a bit of the King’s choice without bursting your gut.
For those looking for something even lighter, try the Central Coast champagne sorbet. With a base of sparkling Brut from McPrice Myers Winery in Paso Robles, CA, the taste is sophisticated yet yummy enough to imagine the King himself would have approved.
