Flea market impresario Phillip Dane has re-imagined the modern urban flea market. At least that's what's supposed to be happening at the oddly-named Gourmet Music Carnival set to take place at the Los Angeles Historic State Park on Sunday, August 21st. We're not exactly sure how this motley mélange of beaded jewelry, scented candles, fairy paintings, local bands, and street eats will dramatically depart from the flea market standard, but we're guessing anyone reading this blog cares a lot more about stuffing face than stocking up on trinkets.
Based on the roster of food trucks set to make an appearance this weekend, those with empty stomachs and a willingness to drop $12 (V.I.P. tickets are a fairly startling $50, but that appears to include things like drinks and private bathrooms) will not be bummed -- especially if prior flea market dining experiences involved graying tamales and mealy corn chips wilting beneath a blanket of congealed whiz.
Allow us to curate a little tasting menu -- based not on insider knowledge but pure gut instinct. Start off with with double onion Kobe beef sliders from Slammin' Sliders, move on to an original fry bread taco from Auntie's Fry Bread, have a tall cup of 'ade from Del's Lemonade, and bring it all home with a red velvet cookie from Sweets Truck. The market gets underway at 11 a.m. and finishes up at 7 p.m. If you're inclined, you could probably do both dinner and lunch there -- or just one big, intestines-wrenching linner to end all linners.
