El Cholo To Open Fifth Location in Downtown L.A.
Can't get enough of El Cholo's famous green corn tamales, enchiladas and sizzling fajitas? Here's some great news: the Los Angeles-based, family-owned chain is adding a fourth location, smack in the middle of downtown. With locations in Santa Monica, Irvine, La Habra and on Los Angeles' South Western Avenue, El Cholo has plans to bring its century-old, authentic Mexican recipes to a new home: the downtown South Park space formerly occupied by the now-defunct Liberty Grill.
The fate of El Cholo's predecessor went unconfirmed for months. A sign reading "Closed For Extreme Makeover" had hung in the restaurant's window since late 2009. However, Bernadette Leiweke, wife of AEG CEO Tim Leiweke, and Camacho's Inc. -- the partnership behind Liberty Grill -- will continue to be involved as the El Cholo transition begins.
