Cooking With Ice Skaters: "What Would Brian Boitano Make?" Premiers on the Food Network
Food television keeps getting stranger and stranger. This month the Food Network will premier a cooking show by former Olympic ice skater Brian Boitano. "What Would Brian Boitano Make?" debuts Sunday August 23. In the show, the US gold medal winner at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games "demonstrates his culinary skills and passion for one-of-a-kind entertaining. In every unpredictable episode, Brian hosts get-togethers at his San Francisco home."
No, Boitano does not secretly come from a long line of chefs; his food expertise stems primarily from the fact that, according to Reuters, the skater "always dreamed of opening his own restaurant even while on a strict diet of salads and potatoes when he was competing." Boitano does, however, have television experience. From his official Food Network bio: "He was the first American male athlete to have his own network television special, Canvas of Ice, which aired worldwide and was seen nationally on the ABC Network. The critically acclaimed special won awards in the International Film and Television Festival of New York and the Chicago International Film Festival."
As Boitano puts it in a trailer for his show, "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll eat bacon." Right. So just one question for the Food Network: why not Tonya Harding?
