On Sunday, April 21, and every other Sunday thereafter, Connie Tran will take over Franco on Melrose for a few hours to create an eight-course, family-style, prix-fixe brunch with beverages like chrysanthemum tea, pickled plum soda and Vietnamese coffee.
The courses are organized into four categories: appetizers, vermicelli, rice and dessert. Within those categories, there will be dishes like chao sang (rice porridge) with lardon crisps and a poached egg; bo a lot (grilled beef wrapped in betel leaf) served with vermicelli cakes, mixed herbs and nuoc cham; and tom rang (grilled honey prawns and okra) with jasmine rice.
Tran's experience in the kitchen extends past her time at Zov's in Tustin and James Beard House in New York, having helped her mother open the pan-Asian restaurant Cafe D'Orient in Orange. BEP Vietnamese Kitchen is Tran's expression of her upbringing: home-style breakfast and lunch dishes meeting favorites from take-out delis and markets in Orange County's Little Saigon.
Brunch will be $37 per person and alcohol is BYOB with no corkage fee. Sommelier Janice Honbo will provide a list of suggested wines via BEP Kitchen's Facebook page. A small marketplace with T-shirts by 3 Stripes Clothing and DIY kitchen kits (Vietnamese ingredients and recipes for coffee, betel leaf beef and pho) will be available for sale.
There will only be one seating at 11:30 a.m. Reservations can be made through email@example.com.
