Gawker this week published a long, impassioned rant against the Food Babe blogger, which prompted a long, impassioned email exchange between me and my mother in law, and probably you and your mother in law as well. The Food Babe's response is here

In a refreshing trend of big food chains trying to inch towards better lives for their workers, Starbucks has announced they'll cover tuition for four year degrees from online universities for their employees

Los Balcones, the Hollywood Peruvian restaurant, has announced they'll be opening a new restaurant right next door. Chavela, named for the sangria-like drink popular in Peru, will be a vegetarian and vegan restaurant. According to the Facebook post: "We will be offering a latin-inspired plant based menu, with artisan sangrias." The menu is already live on the new restaurant's website, with dishes such as achiote-rubbed cauliflower steak, and coconut ceviche. Owners hope to have doors open before the end of the month.

Thrillist asks the burning question: Who is the next Anthony Bourdain? And comes up with a list of folks such as Action Bronson, David Chang and Eddie Huang. Also, L.A.'s Zach Brooks (Food is the New Rock) and Roy Choi. I'd like to argue that some of these folks (David Chang especially) don't need to be the next Anthony Bourdain because they're already the next themselves. Also, it would be nice to see one female candidate...Gabrielle Hamilton is more badass than most of these dudes. But why am I arguing with a dumb list? No idea.

Speaking of Mr. Bourdain, he's going on tour (again). But he's not coming to L.A.

Food & Wine has announced their People's Choice Best New Chef, based on the votes of readers. The California winner is Ari Weiswasser from Glen Ellen Star in Glen Ellen, CA. Weiswasser beat out our fine L.A. chefs including Night + Market's Kris Yembanroong Sqirl's Jessica Koslow and Alimento's Zach Pollack because you all didn't vote for them. For shame.

Eater has some pretty pics of the new Belcampo in Santa Monica, The LA Times reports on STK steakhouse moving to the W Los Angeles-Westwood hotel. and Downtown LA News reports on Eagle Rock's Auntie Em's expansion to downtown
