Calling All Green Thumbs: Sustainable Sundays and Master Gardening at the Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum isn't just about flora, fauna, and fossils. In an effort to make sense of today's gold mine of environmental information, the museum is bringing back its Sustainable Sundays series, and introducing a brand-new gardening workshop for experts and newbies alike.
The museum's Sustainable Sundays series, now in its second season, is a great source for LA's green-minded population, with booths, talks, activities, and specialists helping museum-goers make sense of today's wealth of material on sustainability. This Sunday's segment includes Raw Inspiration for visiting farmers markets in the LA area, as well as reps from the Children's Nature Institute, Public Matters, the LA Conservation Corps, and Trash for Teaching. Gardening experts help visitors plant their own portable herb gardens, while museum volunteers conduct garden tours and supply info on organic farming, soil, water, and GMOs.
Speaking of gardening, the museum teams up with the University of California Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener Program for a four-class Master Gardener Workshop, also kicking off this Sunday. Florence Nishida leads the series on the museum's South Lawn, where she'll give hands-on instruction on healthy soil, watering, transplanting, and growing pesticide-free organic food.
Sustainable Sundays: Good Eats, on Sunday April 11th, from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM): 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles. Free with $9 admission to the museum.
Master Gardener Workshop, on Sundays, April 11th, 18th, 25th, and May 2nd, from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at NHM. Cost is $15 per workshop, or $50 for the 4-class series. Register for workshops at: (310) 455-2231 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
