Alternatives to Green Beer: St. Patrick's Day Cocktails + 2 Cocktail Recipes

Many of L.A.'s mixologists seem to have an aversion to St. Patrick's Day, one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year. We sent a call out to the likes of Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix of La Descarga, Vincenzo Marianella of Copa d'Oro, Marcos Tello of First & Hope and Damian Windsor of Roger Room asking if they had alternatives to green beer that celebrating cocktail enthusiasts could enjoy.

The only responses we got were from Livigni who said, "I'm kinda stumped, I don't often celebrate St. Paddy's and all I keep thinking about are green drinks. Sorry." While Marianella first responded with "WE ARE CLOSED." Really? On a Wednesday? "Is it? Perfect. I won't be working."

Fortunately for drinkers looking for festive cocktails that don't involve green dye, there's the following. A couple of recipes are also included for those who'd rather party at home.

8 oz Burger Bar will be serving up Irish Car Bombs ($8 each) but instead of making them with the traditional Guinness beer, the folks behind the bar will be pairing Requiem Espresso Stout with the Bailey's and Irish whiskey.

From Monday, March 15th to Friday, March 19th, Chaya Downtown has an unusual all-things-Irish cocktail called St. Patrick's Goblet ($13). Since the Irish are notorious tea drinkers this cocktail involves Red Clover Blossom and Irish Breakfast Tea steeped in Hangar Potato Vodka and then mixed with Aperol and fresh sour, shaken and served up.

Comme Ca in West Hollywood will feature two holiday cocktails at $12 each: the green French Leprechaun with vodka, mint, cucumber, simple syrup and lime and the Pot o' Gold, a take on the traditional gold rush with Irish whiskey, lemon and honey.

The Edison downtown won't have any green cocktails but it will have a Reuben and Irish Beer Special for $10 as well as potato vodka with your choice of mix for $1 (one per customer) from 5-7pm.

All Pitfire Pizza locations (Culver City, Downtown, North Hollywood and West L.A.) will be doing up an Irish version of the popular beer float. This one made with Murphy's Irish Stout and organic vanilla soft serve ice cream ($6).

However, if you do have a hankering for green beer, the Culver City bar/restaurant, Rush Street, will not only feature the verdant brew but also "the largest collection of Irish beer in Los Angeles," including Murphy's Irish Stout, Killians Irish Red, Harp Lager, Beamish Irish Stout, O'Hara's Irish Stout, Smithwick's Irish Ale, Wexford Irish Cream Ale, Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale, and six taps of Guinness. There will also be a variety of drink specials including Irish Car Bombs with Guinness and Jameson whiskey, Black Castles with Guinness and Newcastle beer, Black & Tans with Guinness & Bass beer and Half & Halfs with Guinness and Harp beer.

Guinness Milkshake at 25 Degrees in the Hollywood Roosevelt

From: 25 Degrees

Makes: 1 drink

3 jumbo scoops of premium vanilla ice cream

3 ounces chilled Guinness beer

2 ounces chocolate syrup

1. Add the beer and chocolate syrup to the ice cream.

2. Mix just until blended; the mixture should be very thick.

3. Drizzle inside of a glass with chocolate syrup and pour shake in.

Token Irlandese (The Token Irishman)

From: Michael Shearin of Drago Centro

Makes: 1 drink

2 ounces Jameson Irish whiskey

3 drops Fee Brothers Mint Bitters

5-6 springs of fresh mint

1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

1/2 ounce simple syrup

Splash of soda water

1. Muddle the mint with simple syrup.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients, shake and strain over ice in an old fashioned glass.

3. Add splash of soda water and garnish with mint sprig.
