Adventures in Veganism: KindKreme's Vegan Ice Cream

There's ice cream and then there's "Oh my God, this is so good I'd walk to Palmdale for this" ice cream. The almond butter and jam flavor at KindKreme -- a raw/organic/mostly vegan "icekreme" shop -- is the latter.

Thankfully, you don't have to walk to Palmdale because, according to KindKreme co-owner Mimi Moss, the flavor is available at KindKreme's Pasadena and Echo Park locations "year-round" and "when in stock."

The almond butter and jam flavor is made from a KindKreme syrup composed of agave and fresh strawberries -- or at least the jam is. The ice cream itself is smooth and subtle and, if eaten without the jam, would be an ideal substitution for something less exciting. Like vanilla.

You could get wild and add toppings such as seasonal fruit, chocolate chips, granola or raw caramel syrup to the almond butter and jam, but you'd be diluting the taste, so don't do it. That said, a serving of chocolate chips blends well with a scoop of oatmeal-raisin.

Basically, the oatmeal-raisin tastes like breakfast -- if you eat ice cream and chocolate chips at 7 a.m. If you don't, it tastes like the sort of breakfast you always wanted as a child but couldn't have because of those pesky parents. Yes, becoming an adult sucks because of work and taxes and that dreaded "responsibility," but one scoop of the oatmeal raisin with a helping of chocolate chips and for five minutes you are once again 8 years old and all is well with the world.

Also of note is the pecan bun flavor, which is sweet but not overtly sugarly and won't make you feel like your teeth are rotting as you are consuming it.

And if you're still in the mood for more, there's the coconut-orange-pomegranate-date icekreme. This reporter didn't sample the four-flavored treat, but perhaps he should have. Maybe next time -- if next time KindKreme has run out of the almond butter and jam.
