You knew that the new year would bring weird diets, but maybe not like this: The L.A. Times has the lowdown on a half-serious new vegan cookbook that promises to help create a new you with "the tortilla-based diet proven to change your life." Um, we'll stick to our favorite food truck, thanks.

GQ Drops L.A. Food Package

The men's lifestyle magazine is sharing some love for the West Coast in its new issue — and is declaring Los Angeles one of the best food cities in the country. The highlight might be the magazine's interview with Jonathan Gold, in which the former L.A. Weekly and current L.A. Times restaurant critic riffs on everything from "filter organs" to eating at L.A. Live.

The New York Times Magazine Takes a Peek at Sqirl's Turmeric Tonic

Chef Jessica Koslow shares her recipe for Sqirl's popular turmeric tonic with The New York Times Magazine this week, insisting that the restorative drink works as a “healthy, digestive sleep aid." We'll gladly drink some just to stay warm.

In Local News:

  • In a total cool-guy move, Moby announced he'll be donating all proceeds from his new Silver Lake vegan restaurant, Little Pine, to charity. Funds will go specifically to animal welfare organizations such as the Humane Society, Mercy for Animals, Farm Sanctuary, Sea Shepard and PETA.

  • Reports by Eater L.A. have stated that Roy Choi is opening a new restaurant in Palms, most likely a brick-and-mortar expansion of Kogi BBQ called Kogi Taqueria. [Correction: Eater has confirmed the opening with Kogi PR reps.] Choi and his team haven't announced the opening yet, but if it turns out to be true it could be a big get for the neighborhood that lost Chego to Chinatown a few years ago.

  • After closing last June due to a severe kitchen fire, chef Andrew Kirschner's wood-fire centric restaurant Tar & Roses is now open again in Santa Monica after a lengthy repair and construction hiatus.

Join Pasadena restaurants, burger joints, lounges and more as they celebrate the invention of the cheeseburger at Pasadena’s Rite Spot. In 1924, intrepid teenager Lionel Sternberger (really!) first placed a slice of cheese on a burger and served it to a customer at his father’s roadside stand. See participating restaurants here.

Wednesday, Jan. 20:  Los Angeles Magazine's Best New Restaurants Celebration | $70

Join Los Angeles Magazine for its annual Best New Restaurants event. Celebrate the best restaurants of 2015 featured in the January issue, as well as past honorees. The evening of culinary excellence will include tastings from the honored chefs at the Bellwether, Birch, Broken Spanish, Jon & Vinny’s, Le Comptoir, Love & Salt, Redbird, Terrine and Union, as well as handcrafted Bombay Sapphire cocktails, beer, wine and live music.

Thursday, Jan. 21: Spartina: Then and Now | $70

Dine on a four-course feast at Chef Stephen Kalt’s new market-driven Italian restaurant. The evening will include dishes from the original Spartina — Kalt’s groundbreaking and critically acclaimed New York City restaurant, which dazzled Tribeca when it opened in 1994 — alongside new items from his L.A. menu. The event is $70 per person, tax and tip included, with an optional wine pairing available. Seatings take place at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and tickets must be purchased in advance via Table8.
