Never a city to be outdone when it comes to all things gay, West Hollywood officials will legally marry gay couples today, starting at 1 p.m. And nearly everything will be free!

Like many municipalities, West Hollywood was caught off guard on Friday when a federal appeals court suddenly lifted the stay on a ruling that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. City officials are now ready to handle the rush of gay couples who want to get married pronto. Here are the details...

At a 12:30 p.m. swearing-in ceremony today, West Hollywood City Council members and other city officials will be deputized to perform marriages. That event will take place at the Council Chambers inside the West Hollywood Library on San Vicente Boulevard.

On Monday only, civil ceremonies will be performed free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis between 1 and 7 p.m. inside the Council Chambers. Parking will be validated. Whew!

Couples must have a license issued by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder before being married.

The closest Registrar-Recorder branch to West Hollywood is located in Beverly Hills, which is located at 9355 Burton Way on the third floor in room 300. Office hours are between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

West Hollywood will provide a complimentary shuttle between the Council Chambers and Beverly Hills for couples who want to get their marriage license and then return for a civil ceremony in West Hollywood.

The shuttle will depart every half hour beginning at 7:45 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m.

Congratulations, and good luck!
