Weekend DUI Crackdown in L.A. Starts Tonight
There's something about nice weather that brings the idiots out of their caves.
Police know that. So during this season of "dads and grads," the Los Angeles Police Department, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, and Santa Monica police will be on the hunt for drunk drivers.
They're giving us clues about where they'll be (on the next page) with the hope that you'll be smart and take a cab or use a ride-share app. Here's what we know:
-Tonight from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. there will be an LAPD checkpoint operating on Figueroa Street at 112th Street in South L.A.
-Tonight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. an LAPD checkpoint will be waiting for you on Topanga Canyon Boulevard at San Jose Street in Chatsworth.
-Tonight from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. the sheriff's department will doing its own checkpoint thing somewhere in the city of Lancaster (they're not telling us exactly where).
-Tonight from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Santa Monica cops will be operating a checkpoint somewhere inside their city (they're not saying where).
-Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. another checkpoint will be happening, this time on Sepulveda Boulevard at Nordhoff Street in North Hills.
Here's what the LAPD says about spilling the beans on its anti-drunk-driving operations:
The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved traffic collisions. Research shows that traffic collisions involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.
