USC: No Party for Young Men, Especially if it Involves Vegas, the Super Bowl, and Everson Griffen
The party pooper administrators at USC's athletics department are telling USC footballer players they better not be attending a Super Bowl weekend party in Las Vegas organized by NFL pro and Trojan alum Everson Griffen.
The Vikings defensive end was arrested by the LAPD earlier this week after officers said he ran and then grabbed a cop's groin during a traffic stop near campus. Officers Tased and then arrested him. He was also arrested Saturday on suspicion of public drunkenness in L.A.
But those aren't the reasons 'SC athletic honchos are concerned ...
... nope: They don't want players to be around gambling, which is against NCAA rules.
ESPN has the goods:
Athletic director Pat Haden and vice president for athletic compliance David Roberts sent an e-mail to the team and the same e-mail to all student-athletes Thursday ...
"Because of the NCAA rules concerning gambling, impermissible extra benefits and the conduct of agents, we believe that there is a significant chance that the eligibility of any student-athlete who participates in such a trip would be jeopardized. Therefore, you are not permitted to partake or participate in the Super Bowl Weekend trip that has been arranged and promoted by Mr. Griffen or Mr. Campbell under any circumstances."
ESPN notes that administrators are also concerned that disgraced sports agent Teague Egan, now a USC student, is involved in the party planning. He had his NFL license pulled.
On his Facebook page, Griffen says it's his party alone, and he's even charging $100 a head for students to attend:
"I must ask that you do not prohibit the student-athlete body from attending an event that is operating legally by all NCAA standards," he writes, aiming his words at USC administrators.
