UCLA officials announced this week that theirs was the most popular university in America for college applicants.

The Westwood institution says it received applications from more than 112,744 students for fall admission. The figure includes 20,063 wanna-be transfer students, the school said.

The number of those hoping to be Bruins in 2015 surpasses the number of applicants at any other four-year, college-level institution in the United States, UCLA spokesman Ricardo Vazquez told us.

He said the school has been the most popular university in America among college applicants for "several years" running, too.

The number of applications is 6.5 percent greater compared to last year, UCLA said. Applications from African American students were up 13 percent. Applications from Latino hopefuls were up 5.6 percent.

Applications from Asian Americans increased 4.8 percent and applications from white students increased 5.4 percent, the school said.

For the entire UC system, Latinos made up more than one-third of applicants for the first time in history, the University of California said in a statement. A total of 193,873 applicants vied to attend at least one UC campus, the system said.

Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, UCLA’s associate vice chancellor for enrollment management, said the Westwood campus was seeing a "robust increase in the diversity of our applicants."

Sure, everybody wants to go to UCLA, which offers world-class education at a state college price. But are these kids smart? UCLA:

... The quality of UCLA’s applicants — as measured by traditional indicators of academic excellence, such as GPA and admission test scores — also increased.

And the institution said 41.2 percent of applicants hoped to be the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college.

Freshmen who are given the green light to become Bruins will be notified April 1 (no fooling); the admission date for transfers is April 30.
