An Uber passenger was killed early today after getting out of his ride at the side of the 405 freeway in Carson in an attempt to help those involved in a multivehicle crash, authorities said.

He was one of three fatalities at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol was called about the accident on the northbound 405 north of Wilmington Avenue shortly before 1 a.m., CHP Officer Simeon Yarbrough said.

The driver of a 2012 Prius rear-ended a trailer pulled by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup, he said. The truck and the Prius ended up in the No. 1 and 2 lanes (No. 1 is the fast lane) and the trailer blocked the carpool lane, the officer told us.

An Uber vehicle came upon the scene and pulled over to the right shoulder, Yarbrough said. A passenger got out and ran across lanes in an attempt to render aid, he said. The driver stayed put and was not injured.

Three minutes later a Camry driving up the freeway swerved to avoid the wreckage, struck the trailer in the carpool lane, hit the center divider and collided with three people standing outside, including the Uber passenger, he said.

All three were killed, authorities said.

The driver of the pickup had stayed inside the vehicle and survived, Yarbrough said. The Camry's driver was hospitalized with unknown injuries, he said.

The driver of the Prius, also taken to a hospital, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the officer said.

She was identified by the CHP as Micaela Arita. Yarbrough said he did not have an exact age for her but that she is in her 20s.

One of the fatalities was identified by the coroner's office as Richard Le, 31, of Long Beach, according to City News Service. The others who died had not yet been ID'd by authorities.
