Uber Driver Gunned Down in Inglewood
An Uber driver was on the job when he was gunned down in Inglewood over the weekend, a Uber spokesman said.
Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Andre Jamal Bayyan of Los Angeles.
The shooting was reported at 4 a.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of West 109th Street, police said. The victim was found dead at the scene.
TV news footage showed the late-model Nissan Maxima with paper plates and multiple bullet holes in its windshield. The imagery gave the crime the look of an ambush, although details of the attack were unclear.
ABC Los Angeles reported that the victim, at the wheel, was backing out of a residential driveway and crashed into a fence — apparently during or after the gunfire.
Uber spokesman Michael Amodeo told us the victim was "on a trip" when the shooting took place. It wasn't made clear if he was picking up, dropping off or stopping in the middle of a job.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Bayyan to this senseless act of violence," Amodeo said. "Our thoughts and condolences are with his friends, family and loved ones. We have proactively reached out to the authorities to offer our assistance in their investigation."
The case is under investigation. Anyone with info was asked to call Inglewood homicide detectives at (310) 412-5246.
