Today in Photographs: June 10, 1963
Even the background was whitewashed: Four of 14 Black Muslim men convicted by an all-white jury of rioting, stand behind their lawyers, foreground. The photograph was touched up to emphasize its subjects, a common practice at the time. The trial revolved around a violent confrontation with members of the Los Angeles Police Department near Nation of Islam Temple No. 27 the previous year.
