The Most Popular Dog Breed in Los Angeles Is ...
Our friends over at KCRW (89.9 FM) worked on getting L.A. County Department of Animal Services data—your data, really—for months just so you could enjoy knowing the most popular breeds and names in town.
The station was successful and this week published an interactive map (below) that shows that information and more. You can even figure out what breed is popular in your neighborhood.
It turns out the stereotype of a handbag-sized dog toted around in the finest Italian leather by a wealthy celebrity is at least somewhat true. We can't all be Paris Hilton, but we can get her favorite breed:

It turns out that Chihuahuas comprise the most-popular breed in L.A. County, according to KCRW.
Labrador and Labrador mixes came in second place, German Shepherds came in third, Terriers came in fourth, and Pit Bulls came in fifth, according to the station.
However: The list is based on registered dogs. Vast numbers of dogs remain unregistered. This could affect, for example, the showing for Pit Bulls, which reign supreme and sometimes run wild in vast swaths of Los Angeles County.
KCRW put it this way:
Some suspect that the pit bull population is much higher than it would appear from our data. We’ve heard rumors that some owners and shelters deliberately misidentify these dogs in order to avoid scaring off landlords or people looking to adopt a puppy. Robin Purcell of rescue and advocacy organization Angel City Pit Bulls said that pit bulls are underlicensed for similar reasons.
The most-popular dog names in the county, according to the data, were Max, Bella, Lucky, Princess and Buddy. Aw.
