The End of Winter?
This KFI report with JPL oceanographer Joshua Willis strongly suggests that winter is over for Southern California, thanks to a La Nina that is pushing the Jet Stream north. Only last August Willis, whose research on sea-surface temperatures has been wishfully seized upon by climate-change deniers, was blogging that weather cannot be accurately predicted for more than a few days at a time. Now, however, he's saying put away the umbrellas until next fall.
That's bad news for California's agriculture. Last year Governor Schwarzenegger declared astate of emergency
in nine Central Valleys because of drought -- another dry year can only bring another emergency, possibly involving more counties. On the other hand, the Pacific Northwest, Willis says, will enjoy rain this winter -- lots of rain.
