Suspect Apolinar Celestino Lopez is a 30-year-old Venice 13 gang member, a police lieutenant told us today. The suspect was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon but he posted bail and was back on the streets this week, the official said:
After viewing the tape, gang cops figured out who he was, the LAPD indicated.
The suspect was stopped by police near the beach only a few blocks from the scene of the alleged crime, another official, a gang officer, told LA Weekly. Police allege he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs when they pulled him over.
He was "driving at a high rate of speed" before the traffic stop Sunday, the LAPD said in a statement. Cops had already ID'd Lopez as a suspect, so when officers ran his name they discovered he had a warrant for the alleged assault.
The beating happened Dec. 13 on Horizon Avenue near Ocean Front Walk, also known as the boardwalk. A resident in a nearby apartment taped the crime.
The LAPD gang investigator we spoke to did not want to reveal a possible motive. Another suspect in the beating was still on the loose.
L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate data reveals Lopez has had a few other run-ins with authorities in recent months. He was arrested Sept. 23 for an unknown allegation and sentenced to 120 days.
He was arrested again Nov. 15 but was released the same day.
And a day following his arrest Sunday he posted $155,000 bail, according to the data. He was due in court Jan. 27.
