Suge Knight Charged With Murder, Could Face Life
Rap mogul Suge Knight was charged with suspicion of murder, attempted murder and "two counts of hit-and-run with an allegation that he committed a serious and violent felony while out on bail," announced the L.A. County District Attorney's Office this afternoon.
The charges would make this a third-strike case for Knight.
The charges come following Thursday afternoon's alleged hit-and-run in which 55-year-old Terry Carter, an actor and reported friend of Knight, died.
Some witnesses, as well as Knight's own lawyer, claim that the hit-and-run was an accident that took place after as many as four men were assaulting Knight as he sat in his red pickup truck in the parking lot of Tam's Burgers in Compton.
Sheriff's officials have indicated they believe the event was intentional and that, even if Knight didn't intend to strike Carter, he could be liable for murder if he acted with malice toward the other victim, Cle “Bone” Sloan, an actor most famous for his roll in the Denzel Washington Oscar-vehicle Training Day.
Sloan sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Here's the crux of the D.A.'s statement:
Following an altercation on Thursday outside a Compton restaurant, Knight allegedly was driving his truck when he ran over two men standing in the parking lot. One man was injured and the second man, Terry Carter, 55, died. The driver of the pickup fled the scene.
Knight, who was out on bail in a separate robbery case, is charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of hit-and-run with an allegation that he committed a serious and violent felony while out on bail in another pending case.
The complaint includes use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury allegations and that Knight has prior convictions, making this a third strike case.
If convicted, Knight would face the possibility of life behind bars, prosecutors said.
