Snow Summit, Bear Mountain Open Today

One week after our last heat wave, snow season officially starts in L.A.
Following a dusting of snow in local mountains, Snow Summit and sister resort Bear Mountain open for the season this morning with the help of snowmaking guns that have been working overtime Saturday and Sunday.
Mountain High beat them to it:
That resort, in the Wrightwood area of the San Bernardino Mountains, claims it recorded its "largest opening day on record" Sunday.

Late last week the local mountains got a light dusting of snow but the resorts have been blasting their runs with snowmakers, taking advantage of freezing low temperatures (a "freeze watch" was in effect overnight for Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service).
Forecasters said there was a chance of snow Thursday and Friday, too.
If the season keeps going at this rate it's going to be a good one: The resorts usually do well around the holidays, including Thanksgiving weekend.
The folks at Bear Mountain say in a statement that snowboarders can expect a "full terrain park set-up" today:
Although Bear Mountain could open on Sunday, they've chosen to drop the ball on Monday to deliver the best terrain park experience in Southern California.
Calling in sick today? Some of you won't have to, because it's a federal holiday.
In observance of Veterans Day, all three resorts -- Snow Summit, Bear Mountain and Mountain High -- are letting military veterans and active-duty personnel with ID ride free.
