Save Malibu Lagoon Rally: The Fight to Prevent a Rare Los Angeles-Area Tidal Lagoon's Destruction-Reconstruction Gets Down to Wire
Mayorsam blog says the battle to prevent Malibu Lagoon from being subjected to an elaborate "destroy-it-to-rebuild-it" plan is getting attention tomorrow at 4 p.m. at a rally at the Malibu Lagoon parking lot.
The issue of whether to leave the stunning lagoon near Pacific Coast Highway and Cross Creek largely alone, or heavily dredge, bulldoze and cut it into a dramatically different shape and look -- wiping out much of its beauty and degrading its existing wildlife for years -- is a big one to coastal residents and wetlands activists. SaveMalibuLagoon folks are furious about the idea.
The war between wetlands activists who oppose the bulldozing, and large environmental groups who are pushing for the destruction-reconstruction faces an important day in court, described by Surfline.com:
[Opponents] feel the bulldozers are unnecessary and will destroy an ecosystem that's just getting back to its feet. They have years of professional, science-based activism experience at their disposal as well, and recently filed an injunction against the California Coastal Commission which will be heard in San Francisco on May 9th
