After leading police on a high speed chase that included several freeways, an alleged car thief crashed the getaway machine and hid in a bush, according to police.
The story begins at 12:30 this morning when the unidentified man passed Los Angeles General Services police officers -- they guard city properties, including City Hall -- in a reported stolen car at close to 100 mph on the 110.
The driver then covered a lot of ground with a tour of L.A. freeways, including the 10, the 5, the 710 and finally the eastbound 60.
The man in the car crashed into another vehicle and then into a tree on the Findlay Avenue off-ramp from the eastbound 60, and the car caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. The chase ended at 12:49.
