Los Angeles police today were searching desperately for a suspect or suspects involved in what were believed to be random, murderous attacks on several people, some of whom were on their way to church, in the San Fernando Valley this morning.
There were reports that cops also were investigating any possible links to a 6 a.m. car-to-car injury shooting of a female motorist Wednesday in Atwater Village.
Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Liliana Preciado told us the two cases had a few things in common:
The shooter used a shotgun and was in an SUV.
In the last of three shootings today, there was a mattress nearby with satanic messages spray-painted on it, according to NBC Los Angeles. Neighbors reportedly said the mattress had been there previously but that the messages were new.
The San Fernando Valley Sun newspaper was reporting that father-son victims of the attacks this morning are "eucharist ministers'' at the Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church.
Preciado of the LAPD said she could not confirm that.
The shootings started at 5:50 a.m. in the 1400 block of Celis Street in the city of San Fernando when cops discovered
three five gunshot victims, according to LAPD. A 20 50-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
She reportedly was the wife of the father-son victims we mentioned earlier.
At 6:35 a.m. Los Angeles Fire Department station 91 firefighters heard gunfire nearby and summoned the police, according to LAPD. Police found a man of about 30 years of age dead in the 13000 block of Borden Avenue, at the Sylmar Recreational Center, cops said.
He had been shot.
At 6:45 a.m. officers found the body of a woman who had been shot in the head in the 1200 block of Fillmore Street, LAPD said. NBC Los Angles said she was in a car waiting to pick up a friend so they could head to Guardian Angel Church.
This is where the mattress was reportedly found.
Cops are looking for a tan or "light-colored" SUV with tinted windows. If you have information on any suspects, call the LAPD at 1-877-527-3247.
[Added at 3:48 p.m.]: Cops now say the SUV is "gold or tan."
Detectives say they believe the attacks are definitely "linked."
