Queer Town: Prop. 8 Ruling Finally Arrives Next Week

Over the past few weeks, a lot of speculation has been floating around the Internet on when the California Supreme Court will rule on Proposition 8, the November ballot measure that took away the right of gay and lesbian couples to legally marry in this state. This morning, the justices sent out a notification stating that the judgment will come down Tuesday, May 26.
As Fishbowl LA reported, there will be a number of events happening during the course of that day--win or lose. Interestingly enough, President Barack Obama, who's been taking heat from the gay community over his unwillingness to quickly abolish "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and allow gays and lesbians to openly serve in the military, is reportedly visiting Los Angeles next Wednesday, the day after the Prop. 8 ruling. Obama should expect an earful.
On May 30, the Saturday following the supreme court decision, gays and lesbians are also expected to flock en masse to Fresno for an event called "Meet in the Middle," where gay rights advocates will hold a rally to bring the message of full equality to places other than the gay ghettos of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Weeks ago, the common wisdom was that the supreme court will uphold Proposition 8. But with gay marriage wins in such places as Iowa and New Hampshire, pundits and leaders on both sides of the Proposition 8 issue are genuinely unsure how the California justices will decide. Either way, political fireworks will be going off.
