Protesters Angry About Trump's SNL Appearance to Rally Outside 30 Rock
Protesters angry about Donald Trump's scheduled appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend are planning to rally outside NBC's ancestral home of 30 Rockefeller Center in New York today.
SNL is produced there.
Opposition to the GOP presidential candidate's hosting gig Saturday resonated loudly in Los Angeles, where groups such as the National Hispanic Media Coalition have been critical of Trump's claim that Mexican immigrants are criminals and rapists.
Yesterday Southern California U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez called Trump's appearance on the show "an affront" to Latinos.
Organizers of the "SNL Dump Trump Rally" say they'll try to present network executives with the signatures of more than 460,000 people who want Comcast NBCUniversal to replace Trump with someone less poisonous to Latinos.
"The rally will highlight Donald Trump's long history of hate speech targeting Latinos, undocumented immigrants and many other communities, and question NBCUniversal's decision to do business with Trump," the coalition said in a statement.
Some Latino groups are particularly angry because NBC vowed to cut business ties with Trump following his initial remarks about Mexican immigrants in June.
"NBC made the right decision last June to sever its ties with Trump over his blatantly anti-Latino campaign announcement," Janet Murguía, president and CEO of National Council of La Raza, said last month. "Since then he has only gotten worse and more divisive, so this change of heart is even more troubling."
What's more, SNL has a dismal record when it comes to hiring Latino talent. As we calculated previously, only two cast members in 41 seasons have been Latino. A dozen or fewer hosts were Latino.
The National Hispanic Media Coalition and other groups also have been talking about targeting SNL's advertisers.
