A performer has tested positive for HIV, and the porn industry's L.A.-based trade group is calling for an immediate production shutdown as a result.

The Free Speech Coalition today called for a moratorium on adult filming "while we do research to determine if there's been any threat to the performer pool," said FSC CEO Diane Duke:

Duke said the performer's positive hit came through a facility affiliated with the industry's own PASS testing protocol service:

We take the health of our performers very seriously and felt that it was better to err on the side of caution while we determine whether anyone else may have been exposed.

She said that any possible "first generation partners" would be identified and tested:

We want to make sure all performers are protected. The performers' health and safety is the most important thing.

The L.A.-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has been pushing the industry to require condom use on the set, which is the law in most of Los Angeles County, used the occasion to chastise the business for its continued refusal to go along with that program.

In a statement sent to the Weekly and other outlets, AHF chief Michael Weinstein had this to say:

AHF is saddened by the news of yet another adult performer having been infected with HIV. We hope that this person seeks care immediately, and that others were not exposed. Whether this performer was infected in L.A. County or not, this latest news begs the question: how many people need to become infected with HIV for the County of Los Angeles to engage actively in implementing the will of the voters of LA County to protect these performers? How many more performers need to become infected for the industry to comply with existing regulations and laws requiring workplace safety? The willful disregard by the County of Los Angeles and the Industry for the health and welfare of people is becoming more and more apparent. The industry as a whole, and the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health should be ashamed.

Industry blogger Mike South (NSFW link) says the porn star who tested positive is male.

The news comes after a summer in which a few performers tested positive for the sexually-transmitted disease.

The business has argued that consumers won't purchase condom porn and that its twice-a-month performer-testing protocol works by catching positives early and triggering production shutdowns until the problem is isolated.
