Porn Addiction Online: There's An App For That, Says L.A. Company

An L.A. company that says now that porn is basically free online, addiction to sexual imagery is an epidemic that affects 200,000 Americans is touting a software program that can block nude images.

They're calling it RemoteWebGuard. And while it won't shock you if you take one hand off your keyboard, apparently it will weed out all the good bad stuff.

And, just to be contemporary, this thing also applies to ...

... your smartphone. Yeah, there's an app for that, too.

Cover your eyes, pervs.

A statement from L.A.-based RemoteWebGuard quotes sex therapist Sean McFarland:

The internet is the crack cocaine of sex addiction. For many sex addicts, their 'bar' is their computer, the gateway to their insanity. A true Internet addict doesn't have a chance without some sort of filter, as addicts are compulsive, sneaky and willing to go to any length to get high.

The software lets you designate an "authority" who has the keys that can bypass roadblocks to sites you want.

Hmm. Sort of like locking up the liquor cabinet and keeping the keys:

Our system allows you to request any kind of change at any time but these will only be effective upon approval from your designated authority. As soon as you request a change, it is immediately relayed to us. We then forward the request to your authority (sponsor, family member, friend, us) who then have the final say. Once approved, your PC is notified of the result instantly.

It costs $9.99 a month to start, plus initiation fees. Founder Dan Uliel:

I started RemoteWebGuard to help a personal friend with an online addiction and it has grown to help others. The system is inexpensive and effective -- users can set online limits for themselves without their ability to override things. It basically helps them establish and maintain 'healthy' Internet habits.

Not sure how effective this thing is. We like the idea of the one-hand-on-the-keyboard = electric shock better.
