Police Plan DUI Checkpoints for the First Weekend of Fall
Fall is officially here. As is its wont, the season is starting off with a heat wave. And we're not just talking about the warm weather.
The Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies are kicking off the first weekend of fall with a DUI crackdown. The LAPD says that warning drivers about where they'll be and when they'll be there could save lives by dissuading drinkers from getting behind the wheel after one too many.
"If you are planning a gathering or celebration with alcohol included, or if you are out on the town, plan ahead and designate a non-drinking sober driver," according to the department. "A DUI or drug-impaired arrest can cost up to $10,000 or even more, including time in jail, the loss or your driver license and high insurance rates."
The LAPD's data is a little old. The Auto Club of Southern California says the costs of catching a DUI case these days are closer to $16,000. So save yourself some money.
