Over the Weekend: RIP Roc Raida, Psychedelic Furs, L.A. County Fair, Pirates vs. Steampunks, Splash Dance Pool Party
While Angelenos celebrated the last weekend of Summer with the Psychedelic Furs, a strange trip to the L.A. County Fair, Pyrate Daze aboard the Queen Mary, and one grand finale of a pool party at the Standard Hotel in Hollywood, we also mourned the loss of renowned DJ and producer, Roc Raida of the X-Ecutioners, who passed away Saturday due to complications from a spinal injury that had left him hospitalized after a martial arts accident. Read on for more of what we did and who we saw...

For more than 85 years, millions of Angelenos have made the drive to check out the end-of-summer extravaganza known as the L.A. County Fair. On Friday we headed down to the Fairplex in search of the strange, the cool and the scary. Check out photos and details on our weirdest finds (like the Dodger coffin, above) in Liz Ohanesian's "L.A. County Fair: The Strange, The Cool and The Scary."

Splash Dance III attempted to prolong summer as long as possible with one last, beat-the-heat pool party at the Standard Hollywood on Saturday. View more photos in Colin Young-Wolff's Splash Dance III slideshow.
In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, we headed down to Long Beach on Saturday for Pyrate Daze. Held aboard the Queen Mary, Pyrate Daze is a two-day event featuring music, masquerade, merchandise and even a cannon show. The pirates far outnumbered the steampunks, but the latter brought with them an element of Victorian-influenced fantasy. Both groups came armed with creativity and dressed in brilliantly detailed costumes, but we had to wonder, did one outdo the other? View more photos and check out our "Best of" awards in Liz Ohanesian's "Pirates Versus Steampunks at Pyrate Daze."
