Over the Weekend: Flight of the Conchords, Gary Busey at Point Break Live!, Dazed and Confused at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and more
There's nothing more depressing than the end of a long holiday weekend (except the hangover, of course, which is why you should try this remedy). In addition to the WTFBBQs and beach parties, we caught Flight of the Conchords at the Greek, hung out with Gary Busey at Point Break Live!, and inhaled some secondhand smoke during Cinespia's Dazed and Confused screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In a perfect world we also would have cruised over to Minneapolis for Rhymesayers Entertainment's Soundset 2009 hip-hop fest, but since our Flux Capacitor and DeLorean are still in the shop, we settled on several slideshows courtesy of our sister paper, City Pages, instead.
Get me two: George Spielvogel (who plays Angelo Pappas in PBL!) with the original Pappas, Gary Busey
Actor Gary Busey made a special appearance at the Dragonfly on Friday night for the May 22 performance of Point Break Live!, the wildly popular punk-rock stage adaptation of the 1991 action flick Point Break, which starred Busey as seasoned FBI agent and general badass, Angelo Pappas, opposite Keanu Reeves' Johnny Utah. View more photos and go backstage with Busey and the cast of PBL! in my Style Council blog here. Also, read more about the show in "LA People 2009: Point Break Live!'s Punk Theater Impresario -- Thomas Blake."
Flight of the Conchords live at the Greek
Comedy greats come in two's. Abbott and Costello. Rowan and Martin. Wayland and Madame. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords are not only a twosome, but they're also the "fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" from New Zealand (the first three are so big they need not be mentioned). Last year, they performed at the Orpheum, in addition to a few small, surprise shows. Now, the duo have hit the big time, playing the Greek in front of nearly 6,000 fans. Read more in Siran Babayan's review, "Last Night: Flight of the Conchords at the Greek Theater."
"Fixin' to be a lot better, man."
Watching Dazed and Confused inside Hollywood Forever with more people than you would see at a nightclub on the eve of Memorial Day, there was a strong feeling of nostalgia in the air. View photos from Cinespia's cemetery screening of the cult classic in the "L-I-V-I-N: Dazed and Confused @ Hollywood Forever Cemetery" slideshow and read more in Liz Ohanesian's "L-I-V-I-N at Hollywood Forever: Cinespia presents Dazed and Confused."

It was a hot one for Minneapolis at Rhymesayers Entertainment's Soundset 2009, made even more so by some of hip-hop's best. View more photos in Denis Jeong Plaster's slideshow.
