Maxine Waters Rips into Henry Waxman Over LAX Expansion, Sounds Battle Call
In extraordinarily candid remarks to Los Angeles community activists, U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters ripped into fellow Democrat and U.S. Congressman Henry Waxman over plans to expand Los Angeles International Airport.
At a Westchester Democratic Club meeting this past weekend, Waters minced no words, saying she was "misled" by Waxman about his position on LAX expansion, that an "unholy alliance" between the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and labor unions were possibly behind Waxman's push for expansion, and that Waxman had "crossed the line."
Sounding a battle call, Waters said, "I will remind him, every day, that we're after him." Marta Evry of the Venice For Change blog caught Waters' explosive remarks on video.
Waters was peeved to found out that Waxman, both of whom serve communities in the Los Angeles area, was apparently circulating a letter for other California Congressional members to sign to support the expansion -- while at the same time telling Waters he hadn't made up his mind about the project.
LAX expansion has long been a controversial proposal in communities located near the airport.
Waters said on Saturday that she lost her respect for Waxman and that anyone could tell him she said that. Are you listening, Congressman?
The congresswoman then sounded the alarm about the "unholy alliance" between labor unions and the L.A. Chamber of Commerce. "It's something you better pay attention to," she warned. "It's something you better pay attention to for a lot of reasons."
Waters charged that "these are the two places [politicians] go for money -- the Chamber.....and organized labor. And so some of these elected officials don't feel they can be independent and fight. They say, 'Hey, you know, this is too difficult, after all, they've come together on this issue.'"
Waters then told community activists to go into Waxman's district and take the fight to him. Watch out, Henry, Maxine is gunning for you.
