Matthews Castrellon, Suspected Car Thief, Leads Long Beach Police on Reckless Chase Ending in Own Death
All that was left of Matthews Castrellon's vehicle this morning
A man who Long Beach police officers chased onto the 710 freeway early this morning soon became a victim of his own recklessness.
Officers revved the sirens behind Matthews Castrellon, a 34-year-old resident of Downey (located in southeast L.A. County), when they spotted him driving erratically down Long Beach Boulevard at about 1:20 a.m. -- but Castrellon refused to pull over, according to Long Beach police spokeswoman Lisa Massacani.
He then led officers onto the 710 North, where -- after one to two minutes of high-speed pursuit -- they gave up on the chase.
Tragically, however, sometime in the next 20 minutes, Castrellon rolled his vehicle to such an extent that he was fatally ejected from one of its windows in East L.A., near the Rosecrans Avenue exit of the 710.

"Our only involvement was our officers attempted a traffic stop here in our city, off of Long Beach Boulevard," Massacani tells the Weekly this morning.
Massacani says they only followed him for a couple minutes before exiting the freeway, but is not sure what exit they took.
California Highway Patrol officers were investigating the scene of the accident for about four and a half hours, beginning at 1:45 a.m. According to City News Service, "a video reporter at the scene said one officer indicated that the car might have been stolen."
