Marijuana Dispensary Referendum to Overturn L.A. Ban Has its Signatures, Heads to Council
Folks who want to overturn the city of Los Angeles' ban on medical marijuana dispensaries scored a victory today as the City Clerk's office announced they officially have the signatures to take this thing to the ballot box.
The office said this afternoon that, after sampling 5 percent of the 49,021 signatures turned in it found that 110 percent of the number needed (27,425) were valid, triggering its verification.
It also stated:
The City Clerk today has presented a Certification of Sufficiency to the City Council.
Clerk's officials say they expect the City Council to take up the matter by Oct. 7. Its options, according to the Clerk's office:
1. Repeal the ordinance; or
2. Call a special election to be held not earlier than 110 days or later than 140 days after Council action on the petition; or
3. Add the ordinance to the next regular City election to be held more than 110 days from certification of the petition, which in this case would be the City's March 5, 2013 Primary Nominating Election.

In the meantime the ban remains frozen -- your local shop is probably still open -- while this thing is worked out.
City Attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan told the Weekly today:
... The ban is on hold until the Council or voters take up the issue.
We'll be watching.
