A man was hit by "multiple" cars on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway near Crenshaw Boulevard this morning, CHP officials told the Weekly.

How many? So many that investigators weren't even sure. "Several vehicles drove through the scene," an officer told us.

The death was reported was reported at 3:46 a.m. on the westbound 10 near the 10th Avenue overpass, according to the CHP. According to a statement:

Officers observed what appeared to be a collision involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian blocking multiple lanes of I-10 w/b at the 10th St over crossing. Preliminary investigation shows that the pedestrian was traveling on foot south across the westbound lanes and was subsequently struck in the #4 lane by an unknown vehicle.

The 36-year-old victim had not been identified.

If he was in the far right lane we'd assume he either almost made it or was just beginning to cross when he was struck.

Why he was crossing the freeway was still under investigation.
