Los Angeles Police Union Backs D.A. Steve Cooley For State Attorney General
No surprise here: The union representing Los Angeles Police Department officers has thrown its considerable weight behind the man whose office cops often have to work in harmony with: Republican District Attorney Steve Cooley, who's running for California Attorney General against his San Francisco counterpart, Kamala Harris, in November.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League's Wednesday endorsement of Cooley for A.G. came with this statement from LAPPL president Paul M. Weber:
Steve Cooley has dedicated his life to protecting the public's safety. He has been a professional prosecutor for 36 years, a reserve LAPD officer for six years and the Los Angeles County District Attorney for the last decade. It is time that the Attorney General - the state's 'top cop' - be a prosecutor committed to doing the job and supporting law enforcement and enforcing the death penalty, rather than be another politician merely looking to use the position as a stepping-stone for higher office.
Steve has always worked closely with the police agencies and officers in Los Angeles County as our partner in fighting crime, drugs, gangs and sexual predators. As Attorney General, we are confident that he will continue to do the same. Steve has been a leader in promoting the use of DNA and other new scientific techniques to help solve crimes and has established special units to help the most vulnerable crime victims and has gone above and beyond his call of duty to fight for working people as a district attorney, and we know he will do the same as California Attorney General.
