11 Cool Views of the L.A. River

By Lewis MacAdams
Thursday, December 25, 2003 - 12:00 am

From the roof of the old city jail on the east bank across from Elysian Park

From the roof of the parking garage next to the twin-tower jails

From the middle of the Sunnynook Footbridge in Atwater when the river is in full flood

From the tunnel at the confluence of the Arroyo Seco and the Los Angeles River just north of downtown late on a winter afternoon

From the confluence of the Tujunga Wash, looking upstream at CBS Studio Center

Looking upriver from the Burbank Boulevard Bridge in the center of the San Fernando Valley after a storm

From the Victory Memorial Bridge at night

Through Brett Goldstone’s Great Heron Gate at Fletcher Drive and the river

From Rio Vista, on a bluff between the old Olympic Boulevard Sears warehouse and the river. Bonus: picture-post-card views of downtown high-rises

From the prow of the Queen Mary in the rain

From up close with a Bag-Snagger and a faceful of mayflies, pulling a shopping cart out of the river
