The mysterious man in black who ambushed two LAPD detectives in the early morning Tuesday was captured on security video that was subsequently released by the department this week.

The cops, returning from burglary "detail" duty about 4:20 a.m., suffered only minor injuries and returned fire, police said. But the shooter got away:

Now police are hoping someone out there might recognize him and turn him in after watching this video.

"The suspect is still outstanding," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told reporters yesterday before the video was released.

"You can still see a dark object in his right hand," the chief said.

The shooter's motive was still unclear. The detectives had driven up to the parking lot gate at the LAPD's Wilshire Division on Venice Boulevard in Mid-City when the man attacked.

The duo was in a white, unmarked car.

It was the second attack on officers Tuesday.

Early that evening an LAPD gang officer was shot in the face and critically wounded in a search for a suspect on probation. A county probation officer suffered a graze wound in the shootout after 7 p.m. on east 117th street near South L.A.

It turned out the suspect was killed after officer returned fire, police said.

The Wilshire Division shooter, meanshile, is described as a medium-build African American in his early 30s. He has a mustache and a goatee, Beck said. His clothing was possibly "quilted nylon," the chief said.
