LA Weekly Journalists Recognized At Southern California Journalism Awards In Downtown Los Angeles *** Updated

LA Weekly took home several awards, including Best Website for a News Organization, at the Los Angeles Press Club's 52nd Annual Southern California Journalism Awards gala, held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel downtown Sunday night.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave a speech and actor Sean Penn presented the President's Award to CNN's Anderson Cooper.

The Weekly's Gendy Alimurung won the Best Business story for "Man on Man: The New Gay Romance Novels...Written by and for Straight Women." Weekly staffer Christine Pelisek won second place in the fight for Journalist of the Year. (Check out her recent cover piece on an East L.A. hit man to see why.) The paper's Patrick McDonald won an honorable mention in the category.

Pelisek also nabbed an honorable mention under the Personality Profile category for "Grim Sleeper's Sole Survivor." Weekly contributor Courtney Moreno grabbed second place for her piece: "Help is on the Way: Tales of an Ambulance Driver."

Weekly food critic Jonathan Gold received an honorable mention for his work under the Entertainment Reviews/Critics/Column category, while our food blog editor, Amy Scattergood, won an honorable mention for a piece, "Eric Greenspan's 95 Theses" under the Online Entertainment News/Feature/Commentary category.

Former Weekly movie critic Scott Foundas took second place for the Entertainment Journalist category. Weekly creative director Darrick Rainey took first place for his design for the article "Bad Little Suburban Boys" and second place for his design of "Left to Themselves."

Photographer Kevin Scanlon took a second place award for his work in "LA Portraits."

Other big winners during the evening included Greg Katz of the Los Angeles Busness Journal for Journalist of the Year/Best In Show. Alana Semuels of the Los Angeles Times took Journalist of the Year.

Harriet Ryan of the Times took Entertainment Journalist of the Year honors. Bill Boyarsky of Truthdig took the Online Journalist of the Year award.

Colleagues at the Weekly's sister paper, OC Weekly, took home several awards. Gustavo Arellano won for Columnist; Kelly Lewis won for Designer; and Vickie Chang won for Personality Profile.
