L.A. Police Protective League Launches TV Spot For Wendy Greuel

Another City Hall union is now running ads on behalf of Wendy Greuel's campaign for L.A. mayor.


The L.A. Police Protective League started airing its ad this weekend. (Video after the jump.) It comes about a week after Working Californians, the IBEW-funded independent group, started running its own Greuel spot.

So far, independent groups have spent $1.2 million backing Greuel's campaign -- far more support than any other candidate has received.

The LAPPL ad treads some familiar ground, touting Greuel's record of finding waste as city controller. Unlike earlier pro-Greuel spots, however, this one avoids claiming that Greuel has found $160 million in waste, fraud and abuse -- a number that has become controversial. 



The ad also talks about Greuel's record of enacting business tax reform as a council member. Her top rival, Eric Garcetti, also boasts about that, saying the two were "co-architects" of tax reform.


LAPPL has reported spending about $300,000 on TV time for the ad. Working Californians also reported spending $525,000 on its own pro-Greuel ad this week. Better Way L.A., an independent group supporting Kevin James, spent about $350,000 on ads this week.

The police union, which represents LAPD officers, wants the next mayor to restore overtime, which was cut sharply during the recession. Greuel has promised to hire 2,000 additional officers, though that is not one of the LAPPL's priorities.
