This will come as absolutely no surprise.

Angelenos pay top dollar to live in this here fair city. But we're not talking about the cash you spend on foodie pop-up restaurants, Uber surge pricing or parking near your favorite downtown mixologist.

We're talking about basic spending on where you live—housing, utilities, repair, laundry, cleaning and the like. What's perhaps most surprising about a recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report on the American cities with the highest housing-related spending is that ...

... L.A. didn't come out on top. We didn't even make the top 5.

We came in at a lowly number 6, according to the bureau. L.A. was beaten by number 1 Washington, D.C. (which also topped a list of per-capita wealth in America), San Francisco (2), New York (3), San Diego (4), and Baltimore (5).

The bureau concludes that ...

... household expenses in the top-ranking cities easily outdo the national average of $16,887.

Ouch. Consider that the per capita (individual) income in L.A. county is $27,900: You can see just how hard it is to make ends meet in Los Angeles.

But you probably already know.
