That police found five guns, dope and drug paraphernalia in a Skid Row hotel room comes as no surprise. The wild part of this story is that you could practically Taser the building from the back of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division because it's so close.

According to the Downtown News, officers last week were investigating reports of drug dealing -- brazen, if true -- at the Southern Hotel. Specifically, they wanted to check out 55-year-old Jimmy Joe Dukes. They allegedly found the 300 grams of cocaine and marijuana, paraphernalia and weapons, including two shotguns, in his room.
The hotel stands at East Fifth Street and San Julian Street, just a stones throw from the Central station, at 251 E. 6th St.
According to KPCC, Dukes was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine for sale and possession of a deadly weapon (brass knuckes). Police said he had a rap sheet dating back to the 1970s. He was being held on $105,000 bail.
It's not the first time crime has come to the LAPD's neighborhood. In the early '00s San Julian Street was practically an open-air drug bazaar, inspiring a realistic scene depicting zombie-like users milling about in the 2009 film The Soloist.
